i went to three t-mobile stores today, and one didnt have a demo one to use. one was being held by the manager, who wasn't there. and then the third store had just had someone with it in, but i had missed them by 10 minutes. very upsetting. heh
Well, I went to a local T-Mobile store here in Orlando and I had the opportunity to play around with a G1 for about a half an hour. At first, they told me they didn't have any at the store and that they were only getting it on the 22nd. However, after I told them that I had preordered the phone, they took me to the side and pulled one out. Here are some of the things that stood out during my short relationship with it.
1. The phone is a lot smaller than the videos made it out to be. It really does fit perfectly in your hands. I was comparing it to my girlfriend's iPhone and you seem to have a lot better grip with the G1.
2. This thing flies. Didn't notice any lag whatsoever. To my surprise, I didn't even experience the scrolling stutter during browsing that some videos mentioned. Compared to the iPhone, I didn't notice a difference at all.
3. The trackball is amazing! I especially liked using it in web panning. It was really accurate and allows you to not resort to using your fingers and smudging the screen.
4. The screen is really bright, even outside. Something that I definetely noticed was how bright the screen was, especially when using the phone outside. It didn't suffer some of the glare problems that the iPhone has.
5. The interface is so fluid. I have been playing around with the emulator for a while, so I was pretty comfortable with the interface right off the bat. I really like how clean and organized it is. The combination of the buttons and the touch screen really makes getting to where you need to get a breeze.
Unfortunately, I didn't get an in-depth analysis of it as I was talking to the employee most of the time. I did forget to ask about the battery life, which is a huge factor for me. I was going to ask to take a picture with it, but I didn't want to put them in an awkward situation since they weren't even supposed to be showing it to me. One of the employees told me she especially liked the brown version because of the silver keyboard, which made it easier to see during lighted conditions compared to the black and its black keyboard.
All in all, the phone really is an amazing piece of engineering. The guy told me I should expect it to arrive at my doorstep on the 21st-22nd of this month. If you have any questions, I might be able to answer them. Keep in mind, I didn't play with it for that long.

I don't know how you guys can do it. I would think that going to the store to play with the G1 then handing it back over only to go home and wait would be brutal. I know if I played with one and still had to wait 10+ days I'd go crazy!
Dude thanks for the info!!! However i NEED to know which store?? I just went to the Sand Lake Rd. one and they said they didn't have a demo one.
I live in Orlando aswel... I was planning on going on the 22nd cause I figured they wouldn't have them until then...
I have a close contact that works in the T-Mobile central office near the Florida mall.
And he said that they wouldn't know how much discount they're gonna get off of the G1 until the day that it arrived at the store. That was about a week ago, and he hasn't contacted me yet.
Either way, I'm glad I didn't pre-order the phone through the internet since I'm going to get a sweet deal on it.
Btw, first post!
Guys, check the Orlando group. Im hoping we could fill it up! That way we could have buddies to play wifiarmy against!BTW welcome to AC!

Hey i'm from Orlando which store is this that allowed u to see the phone?
Good post. Even better because it was a review that was simplistic and touched on regular specs instead of all that technical jargon a lot of phone owners don't understand or don't really care about. I'm even more excited now...hope mine comes early!
WiFi Army? Is that, like, Delta Force for the G-phone?
