You need a data plan to use data features like that. Very likely you can use Edge for data but you'd still need it added to your plan and it is also very unlikely you could connect to 3G unless your carrier uses the same frequency.

Your tomtom system very likely uses downloaded maps, which is something I'd really like to see for the G1. You can still get a GPS fix without a data plan but obviously it won't download new map segments on the fly. You can however preload a trip with wifi and trace the route so it loads the appropriate map segments at the zoom you want which is something i've started doing when I know I'll be out of a service area.

I think T-Mobile made a good choice by installing European 3G network frequency - that way ATT customers can have it unlocked but not to the full extent since 3G network will not work

you are write it would be awsome to have something like tomtom on G1. Pre loaded maps would be fine because it will have the ability to work with voice nevigation as well. I hope developer comes out with something interested. But for now have to depend on wifi or Data plan which cost extra 25 to 40 bucks

I'm sure TomTom, Navigon, or one of the other companies will make an android compatible nav system with downloaded maps like they did with the Windows Mobile phones. Just give it time.

But yes, with Google Maps you'll need an active data connection because the maps get downloaded on the fly.
