Try going under Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->Gmail->Clear Cache and Clear Defaults (Clear Data wouldn't hurt either) Anything that is erased will be re-synched right back up as soon as you're done.
That worked for me.
ugh. for the past 2 days my gmail app hasn't been showing new emails.
when i try to refresh it will either say "no connection" or it will have the dots in the notification space saying "retreiving data" (or something). cannot send emails from my phone either. it shows me how many new emails i have: Inbox (4) but I do not get notifications about these emails and i cannot see the new emails.
everything else appears to be working correctly.
i have tried soft resetting, powering off completely and taking out the batter, changing my gmail password and seeing if when prompted it would reconnect (it does ask for the new password, but still does not work)
any suggestions?
thanks!

I actually encountered the same problem when the cupcake update came...what I did was do a factory reset...just goto settings in about phone and it should appear...worked for me!
