Default Gizmodo Hero review is up

    http://gizmodo.com/5318860/htc-hero-...gically-flawed

"Tragically flawed" but "the Hero is still the best Android phone yet" so my pre-order still stands
Black HTC Dream with Cyanogen 3.6, apps to sd, HTC IME, custom boot pics.
    White HTC Hero.

I just read the full review. It had me a bit discouraged, but I am still very eager to buying this phone when it comes out in the US.

Gizmodo's main complaint was the speed of the interface, but I don't think I will have much on the home screens to warrant a slow down so I think it will be fine for me. The camera and whatnot are not a big issue for me either.

And, I'm sure there will be optimizations to the UI via HTC in the coming months, and I'm sure that the community can make some optimizations or apps to make it run smoother.

I'm sure HTC will put out a few firmware updates that help the speed issue.

    OLD PHONE·T···Mobile· G1 (broken camera):
    ROM: CyanogenMOD

PocketLint review also now up -

Look away now if you don't want to read the conclusion!

It's not perfect and it's the room for improvement that really excites: you know the Hero can get better, and with a few software tweaks no less. We've waited a long time for a smartphone to be confident about challenging the iPhone as number one, and finally the HTC Hero arrives as a viable contender.

It's curious, our demo Hero doesn't seem anywhere as slow as Gizmodo found. The camera is snappier (ha!) than theirs, and while there's a small pause in swiping across homescreen panes it's only when one of the widgets is updating (i.e. Peep pulling in new tweets). I'm thinking it's a firmware issue too.

yea exactly. no one is changing my mind about this phone.

plus like everyone said let some get root access and start optimizing it and i know it will be fine.

i am also willing to bet that even though the hero's processor is 528 mhz its underclocked.(like the g1.) so if you just set the clock speed at what its supposed to be and get a swap partition going and i know my hero will be great.

    This makes me want to either;

    1. Consider the HTC Magic instead.

    or

    2. Ask someone if Cupcake can be installed on the Hero without the Sense UI... and run faster.

This is assuming it can be rooted.

the tmobile mytouch still can't be rooted yet as it uses the "perfected" spl. I'm guessing htc will use the same spl for the hero.

Hopefully somebody will be able to crack it.
