Question Give me a good reason to get the Hero over the G1

So I'm in a position to buy either, but the hero's lack of a physical qwerty keypad is really bugging the sh*t out of me, I can't help but feel the majority of applications, emulators etc will benefit from this greatly.

And another thing stopping me from buying the G1 is the less amount of ram, the terrible terrible battery life I keep hearing about and it's general ascetics aren't as nice to look at although I'm sure it feels really safe, solid and secure in someone's hands.

So, I'm asking if you could give me some of your reasons as to why you chose the Hero over the g1, or if you are upgrading from the G1 and why that is.

I thank you for your upcoming replies, I wonder if it's ok if I post this kind of thread in the G1 folder to see the difference in responses.

Sorry, I can never make my mind up about these things!

I like my g1, my battery life usually only runs about 4 hours before I want to charge it again but I deleted a few apps that ran in the background and it's fine now.
    I like my emulators.
    I like my hardware QWERY
    I like having apps2sd
And the ability to get over the small ram via swapping.

The hero is a nice stock device, the g1 isn't a nice stock device.
Pick your poison. Mind you the g1 was a beta tester for sales and statistics for the Google platform and it can't get any updates past 1.5 [stock]

I do not mind doing all the hacking, that's fine by me as I'm sure there are plenty of guides to help.

Doesn't apps2sd work on the hero?

What do you mean by getting over the small ram via swapping? :S

And 4 hours before needing to charge again? Seriously!?!!

I like the Hero, but I like my g1 and its Hardware QWERY. The hero is the best all touch device out there because it has multi touch so it can understand multiple input coming in for faster and better typing.
Probably does but then again you can get your g1 to run exactly like the Hero

I'm generally not that impressed with a phone to upgrade too, give it a few more months and something will beat the Hero, [aka the Sholes] but even after that and so forth.
The specs are getting better but its not that great yet.

Ram is memory for applications to run that are native to the OS such as an application. The g1 has a small amount of ram so everytime you use the browser and then open up 1 or 2 other apps it has to auto refresh the page.
The swap/compache/whatever it is fixes that problem, I haven't used it yet since I don't have a better sd card though.

Not to mention a simple hack enables multitouch on the G1, I'm finding less and less of a reason to get it over the hero. Thanks alot for the reply, any more input is still very much welcome. I don't think there's enough comparison between the two devices to be honest.

We don't have multi touch, I believe its technically called slosh or something its when you use it but the device doesn't support it, it's not the smoothest, and its really not that big of a deal.

It is best you just go and try to find one used, it isn't worth paying anything more than 200 dollars at most now days.

The G1 is a brick and it is now what two years old? Also the G1 will not be getting any upcoming firmware updates. Other than that not much reason not to get the G1 if thats what your looking for.

The G1 is not two years old! And who said the G1 will not be getting any more updates??? Where in the heck are you getting your information from???

OP, YMMV on battery life. If you do a search in the forums, you'll find plenty of people with a battery life longer than 4 hours.

The Lord is my strength and my redeemer...

Google developers have sadly stated that they're not sure they can fit the next updates in the paltry G1 memory.

We *might* still get updates, but the future of the G1 is grim indeed. Stupid HTC put WAAAAY too little memory in the bugger.

After that, rooting might be the only way to get updates to the G1. I'm going to jump ship as soon as there is a new phone that has a hardware keyboard for Tmo. The CLIQ has me intrigued. I'm hoping the InstinctQ comes out soon.

Well I shouldnt say the G1 will not get any updates It will still recieve minor updates/patches but it has been reported that due to lack of memory the G1 might not be able to support bigger updates like donut. But obviously no one knows for sure until donut is released.
