I hope that's it.
Hi All: i got my G1 this morning and have discovered several issues despite not having much time to spend to play with it during the day. these are the more obvious "areas for further development" and may well be easily addressed by a firmware release, or a little program that could change a portion of the functioning of the G1.
1. Cannot dial using the soft numeric key pad in the so-called "Dialer Mode" by name: in every single phone i've ever recalled using, if one were to dial using the numeric keypad the name, for example, Ben, one may dial "236" since 2 = B, 3 = E, and 6 = N. This, as far as i know, cannot be done on the G1. This is HIGHLY inconvenient. As far as I can tell, granted, this is based on very few hours of playing with it, one MUST open up the keyboard, and use the actual keyboard to spell out several letters of the person you wish to call, and THEN it would provide you the options of people you can call. The way the screen slides open on the G1 and the way the keyboard is laid out is not conducive to be used "one handed", as a consequence, one cannot call "Ben" easily.
Having said that, I realize that i have 1,700 contacts and that may be unusual, because it makes scrolling through the long list (even using the right hand side "tab fast scrolling by alphabet":smileywink: unwieldy and slow, and requires unusual manual dexterity to quickly find your contact which you wish to call.
I'm sure the response we'll get from the "company" (or, in this case, the combined consortium of 3 companies, HTC/Google/TMobile) is that you can "star" your Favorites and make a shorter list of Favorites. Well, that's only good if you have a small number of "Favorites" to call!! What if some folks tend to call many many people and they wish to ask the phone to assist in finding the people via a combination of keys using the soft numeric keypad? As this functionality is available on every single phone that i can think of, why remove it? I am lost on this one - maybe i have yet to find how to use it, to which i say: sorry...should have looked more before i post.
2. Echo of myself: i hear sometimes an echo of myself talking as i am on the phone with someone.
3. Volume on the phone too low: the volume is too low on both the handset (a little too low) as well as the speakerphone (much too low). i have not yet tried the included earbuds.
4. the back cover does not snap in totally securely: holding the phone, when you look down at the LCD, the right hand side, near the right bottom of the LCD, is the camera button. whenever you push the touch screen near the right bottom part of the LCD, you feel the portion of the back cover (which is a bit loose), to move a little (from looser to tighter, though it doesn't stay put in the tight position). Additionally, the feeling is compounded by the fact that the LCD screen and the hinge (which is quite strong and robust feeling), has more "give" on the right side than the left side, so when you press the LCD touch screen on the right bottom part of the LCD, BOTH the screen half the phone moves a little (towards the keyboard part), and the bottom covers moves in slighter though doesn't stay tight. this gives the phone a sense of flimsiness, though it is only a sense, because it does feel like it is rather well made.
Sorry to come across with these criticisms. I feel that these are entirely objective and legitimate. I hope others will agree that these are constructive criticism.
I hope that's it.

Personally, I don't like the keyboard. It must be that I'm not use to it yet. I'm always hitting the period button instead of the space key. I have to keep remembering this isn't a Sidekick.

I LOVE my G1!
Before I bought this phone I read 5 or 6 reviews written about the phone. Heard a lot of complaining:
"No virtual keyboard, no stereo blue tooth, its fatter and heavier than the Iphone, the chin makes it look ugly, the keys are too close together, blah blah blah..."
I prefer to look at all the bad than the good. Good stuff will be copied by everyone, but the bad crap defines a device. If you can accept the bad, then youll love the good.
I agree, the speaker should be louder, and I wouldnt mind clearer sound, but Im happy with how it is now. It works, and it works well, so Im happy. But the one thing that really bugs me is the USB port. When your charging your phone, or transferring data, it odd to hold the phone and text. But really, where else would you put that plug? Maybe just north from where it is, would make a functional different but might look funny.
Oh, and the keyboard... The return key is right below the delete key are right next to each other. I still sometimes delete full lines of text when I mean to hit the return key. Maybe moving delete to the other side would be nice.
