they have to do so in able to stay profitable... i won't argue that you wouldn't pay that price because i can completely understand that, but if they kept on offering you phones at that price, they'd eventually have to make you sign a 3 or 4 year contract agreement to make in losses for the phone price up front
Buy the rumor, Sell the news.

Seeing that TMobile wants $350 from me for a G1, I've had no problem waiting until I can get the exact same unit for $179. I'm sure the OP could do the same unless he's got money burning a hole in his pocket, in which case I'd like to sell him a bridge or some volcano insurance.

I was debating between this and the iPhone (In hindsight i don't know what I was thinking, but at the time it was a tough decision). With my discounts through work I could have paid full price for an iphone 3G (199 8gb) and recieved 25% off my bill, or I could have paid 139.00 for a G1 and got 15% off my bill.

Obviously I chose the G1...a steal at 139 and add in my 8gb class 4 micro Sd and I saved about $50 over an iPhone and even with the getting 10% less off a month with T-Mobile my bill is still cheaper.

So in summary, yes it was worth it to me. Also...if I had payed $300 dollars for the phone I don't think i would feel ripped of at all. Just my 2 cents

The only thing I feel like commenting on is the open source/proven part really and the comments about who has heard about Android.

iPhone & Mac = OSX && OSX = Linux/Unix so in my opinion if iPhone is proven then by default Android is as well.

BTW: I love my G1, I was so impressed I ported it to my work phone which is a Sprint HTC Touch.

I think being able to carry around the internet in your pants is well worth the money.

its not been out to long, but with these figures, its seems that its making good progress really fast.

and as for the price, i am 18 months in to my contract and am charged 350 for upgrade, new people to T-mobile get it for 180...

who believes we will see flash on it anytime soon? being able to watch hulu on the phone would be the "Killer" app.

really? i was only 1 year deep into a 2 year contract and got it for $179

well congratz to you lol, i was 13 months and got it for 350 bucks, but it has been money very well spent..

the only problem now is, im again 13-14 months in to my contract.. i need a new phone and there is no upgrades at tmobile apart from N1 which is not even at tmobile and google require you be 22 months in to your contract..

i was thinking about HTC HD2 but thats shying away from android and i love android..
