    Default G1 password

I haven't been able to find an answer to my question so far. How many dots can you use for your password to unlock the phone. All they show is a simple design of sliding across a few dots for a password to unlock the phone. If you can only go across the dots once, there would not be many possible combinations. It wouldn't be hard to figure out the password. I looked at the G1 user manual and did not see anything about how few or how many dots you can use for your password.

    Thanks,

    Tim

You can connect the dots in any pattern using vertical, horizontal, or diagonal lines. The pattern must also match the DIRECTION in which you originally created it. Using this logic, this 'password' would be more difficult to crack than a regular alphanumeric password. There are almost as many possible combinations as well. It's up to you to make it an easy or hard pattern.

Gee. Will the answer affect your purchase decision or do you have to come out with a password before you get the phone? What's the fun of getting a new phone if you know the answers to every potential secret it holds.

I was trying to figure out how many combinations were possible but its proving to be a very difficult problem. Without accounting for diagonal lines i was getting like 5000 different combinations but i cant get an exact number and its pissing me off!! Any math geniuses out there know how to solve this???

The number of possibilities will depend on a couple of things. Where you start may make a difference (I can't prove it mathematically, but I think it probably does make a difference). More importantly, we haven't been told if you can go back to the same dot more than once. If you can, then the number of possibilities will limited solely on the maximum length of the password.

well if you think about it your limited to how far you can go with the dots... but you can make letters like U,G,Z,N,I,O,A, the list goes on.

There are more combinations using #'s or letters, the dots limitation cannot be computed as if they were regular # combination because in # combinations we are able to jump around various numbers across the spectrum. With the dots once we move from any dot, you have a choice of your next dot being any one of it's neighbor. Meaning I cannot lift my finger up to go across the screen to the far corner dot to us as my next possible combination.

    get it?

You could use as many dots as you like from my understanding.
