    Default G1 Message Alerts/Ringers

This may be a redundant post, but I just got my G1 yesterday. I'm a long time blackberry user hoping for a move to open-source (and the G1 is a cool piece of equipment).

Here's my problem: I need to be able to silence/vibrate email and text notifications independent of the ringer. IE if I am in a meeting, I need to have my phone vibrate for voice calls, but not make noise if I get messages.

The only way I can see to do it so far is to silence the whole phone. I've come up with workarounds for my work (exchange) email... they're clumsy but working. But if I can't get a notification for a phonecall w/o one for an email, I can't use the phone.

Does anyone have any ideas, or am I just missing something?

    Thanks!

I'm wondering the same thing.. is there no profile support on the G1?

I find that at work, I need my phone to vibrate for all notifications -- email, calendar events, and phone calls.. however, the only shortcut I've found is to hold the power button and turn on Silent, which silences everything, including Vibrate (even though Vibrate is turned on in the phone settings).

    Does anyone know

    a) How to set the phone to be silent but still vibrate quickly, via a shortcut perhaps?

    or

    b) If the G1 supports profiles, and how to switch between them..?

OK -- just read here that you can put it in Silent then hit the volume rocker up once to put it in Vibrate..

Is there a quicker way? ; ) I find that volume rocker gets hit kinda often by accident when typing..

Go to the market and try out Locale. I set up one profile for "sleep" that runs from 10pm to 7am, and one profile for "work" that uses my location to set my ringer lower, etc. try messing around with it and see if it does what you need it to.

But again, this does not separate the need for different notifications for each event type: incoming calls, calendar events, SMS, emails, etc. Locale can silence the whole phone, or turn up the volume on the whole phone, but not discriminate for different events such as these.

Generally speaking, I have my email set to only vibrate (no ringer) and then just use the ring volume button (rocker) on the side to go to vibrate for calls during meetings/class. One of the annoying parts of the G1 currently is that when you silence the phone it also silences the vibrate unless you use the ring volume button the side. I also went ahead and recorded silence as a ringtone using the Ringdroid software and apply it to specific notifications/people that I don't want to hear anything for. Now one email vibrates, another does nothing, and call ringer volume I control with the button on the side. Seems to work.

You can manage them separately! You just have to do it independently in each app. For the phone. Silent is in the main settings ringtone menu at the very top of the ringtone choices, above the 'A's. For Messenging and G-mail/eimail, go in to the app, press Menu, and select Settings. Same deal - scroll up, above Default, and you will find Silent. You can also setthe Vibrate options in the app Settings.

I feel better having figured this out - I was getting tired of the phone waking me up every time I got an e-mail!

Volume Control also allows for setting the volumes separately for Ringtones vs. Notifications vs. Alarms, etc. It is a free download in the market place.

You might try the App Do Not Disturb. Its designed to put the vib/ring of the phone on a schedule so it goes off and on automatically.

I spent a half hour onr the phone with tmobile g1 support for the same issue. Prior to the cupcake release, you could turn off sms notifications. But the word today was that it is no longer possible with this version of the firm ware. Tech told me to post it here, cause that's where developers hang out.

So here's what I want to see:

Ability to turn on and off alerts, ring only, vibrate only, led only, for individual notifications, ie. Sms, email, voicemail, calls...

Ability to set different ringtones and vibrate patterns for each individual type of notification.

Ability to set the led color for each type of notification.

I'm totallyl ost as to why the notification control disappeared with cupcake, but it drives me crazy.

There is a free app in the market that let's you change the led color for sms, I think its called dg alert. I keep my phone out on my desk mostly, so I can keep it silent and use the led color as a guide. The problem now is I get two notifications for each message, one from the app and one from the phone. Before cupcake, I turned off notifications on the phone and it worked fine. So I'm really annoyed right now.

Every other phone I've had let me set different ringtones for anything I wanted. I don't know why I can't here. My last three phones let me set different led colors and vibrate patterns for each notification. Those were simple nokia phones, variations on the razr, nothing so fancy as a blackberry. So again, I don't understand how that got overlooked here.

    Please someone fix this!
