Custom SMS alert tone

Hi !

I've seen a few threads on this board about assigning a custom MP3 for SMS alerts but I still can't make it work. I tried a couple of 3rd party apps out of market but they seemed to cane the battery. So...

Is there any way of adding an MP3 of my choice to the existing folder of tones, so that the phone can just pick that one?

I've got as far as using Linda File Manager to copy my MP3 and navigate to the alert tone folder, but then it won't let me paste the file. PLease let me know if you've found a way of doing it and do tell with as little jargon as possible!

It must be years since I had a phone that wouldn't let you customise your SMS alerts easily. Really bizarre because the Hero offers so many advanced features. I wonder why they keep on overlooking a really basic one - or is it me that's overlooking something??!!

PS I need info specifically for the Hero. I think other models might work slightly differently...

I would like to know how to do this as well!! I am new to the Android OS. I have used gphone all in one to navigate to where the file needs to be but it fails on paste. You would think an OS with so much potential would allow something as simple as custom notifications. Any help would be great!!

Once you have your ring tone. If you don't have one use ringdroid. Once you have it go into the sms program hit menu then settings and then goto select sounds.

Well you would think it should be that simple but I don't get the option to see anything custom. Only whats on my phone. I need to know if it possible to add custom notification sounds. I can add custom ringtones.

Clandest, you can't do that on the Hero ! That's why I asked for Hero replies. Thanks anyway...

I am using a hero Rom, so you should be able to. Makes. Sure you are in the root of your. messages

Sigh. No. I have the genuine Orange ROM from HTC and you can't do it that way. It's the first thing I tried. And I don't want an unofficial ROM...

Pete, I've only done this using Ringdroid which is a great app. So, you select the MP3 you want to use from your music library (which will be already assimilated by Ringdroid) - you edit it to the precise sound/ music clip you want to use. Using Menu button you'll get the option to Save, choose that, it'll give you the option of saving the clip as Music/Alarm/Ringtone or Notification. Choose Notification. Now go into your SMS, choose Settings, choose Notification Sound. Now, in the pop-up list alongside the stock sounds you'll also see, say, 'Day in the Life' (or whatever the song or sound is labelled as), choose that and you get 'I read the news today, oh boy' as your notification sound!

(excuse odd Beatles obsession - but I have this clip as one of my notification sounds altho' sadly I can't hear it if it's in my bag)

Thanks mate - that worked like a charm. I now have my favourite Roadrunner ringtone available. It creates quite a stir in supermarket queues. Beatles is a good obsession !
