Default contacts made on phone disappear -- only contacts I add online, stay on the phone

Anybody else have a problem where contacts that you create on your phone, mysteriously vanish? (i.e. its as if you never made the contact)

I think I got it figured out. And it is really stupid if you ask me.

I only have like 2 groups synced with gmail contacts, because I have a stupidly large ammout of gmail contacts, and I dont want them all synced with my phone.

So when I make a new contact, it has no group. When it syncs, it does add the said contact to gmail account, but then removes it from the phone, because its not in a group of contacts I have chosen to sync.

There is a "Starred in Android" group that is automatically created both places. (which does not automatically always sync**)

Seems like there should automatically be a "Android Contacts" group, so that any contact made on the phone, is automatically put in that group, and that group is ALWAYS synced (as long as you are syncing with online). That would be super simple, and would prevent this annoying behavior.

As it is, I guess I am going to manually add "Starred in Android" group to my sync, and I'll just have to remeber that if I do not star new contacts, they will disappear from my phone.

**(very non-intuitive -- in what situation exactly, is someone NOT going to want "Starred in Android" contacts, synced on their phone, and thus dropped from their phones contacts?!)

Doesn't seem stupid to me. Unless you verify it's not something simple, you could waste lots of time looking at more complex possibilities.

That said --- i was actually hitting save, and the contacts would disappear afterwords.

Also, I found what my issue was -- it is posted above.

It was due to some very non-intuitive design, that will hopefully get updated to act more intelligently.

The problem I have with all of this is, I don't want everyone that I email a few times to show up in my phone, as they are automatically added to your gmail contacts. So, I sync only a particular group, but then you get the problem as stated above. I don't want to use the "Starred in Android" workaround, because I actually use the star system to keep track of my most-dialed number since finding numbers in Android is so ridiculous. When you make a contact, there is no way to add them to a contact group. All of this is very dumb for an OS made by such a smart company.

That doesn't address the issue at all. I guess I'll just have to go into gmail on a computer every week or so and empty the "Suggested Contacts". Not a good solution.

Hi,

I have just got my G1 and have tried 6 times to add my fiancees number and it shows his name and then 30 seconds later says I have no contacts in my phone.

Is this a glitch, or a problem with the phone?
Very troublesome that contacts cannot be imported via Bluetooth.
I have not been able to find solution yet to this problem.

I have a T-mobile Lap top and think this could be an option, but the sim will not take all contacts from phone in to sim all at one time.

This is a mere chore, can any one provide a solution ?

In a forum like this, it is generally a good idea to READ a thread to see if it already contains the answer you are looking for.

If you are having the disappearing contacts problem, then most likely you need the answer in post #3 above.
Here is a direct link.

Regarding getting your initial set of contacts into the phone, it is probably easiest if you are able to get the contacts on your computer, and then import them into your gmail account.
