    Default Considering Root...

This isn't just another "I WANT TO ROOT GUYZ, TELL ME HOW"

I've looked into how to do it...and after reading the optional update the SPL I've came upon a few questions.(Mainly because a Phonedog guy(John) bricked his phone by doing something with the SPL)

(I'm assuming the SPL is kinda like the BIOS on a computer? correct?)

Anyways...I've been looking at rooting and I was just wondering...when is a SDL update required? When is a DOWNgrade required?

Lets say I'm coming from a OTA Official Cupcake Update...to lets say...the new Hero or ION build. Would I have to update/downgrade the SPL? I'm just trying to learn before I just JUMP into it headfirst.

Thanks ahead of the time for reviews, and I searched 'SPL risks' and didn't come up with quite what I was looking for.

    Anyways:
    1.) When is a SPL update/downgrade required?

2.) Is it required with Hero/Ion?(seems like it would be for some reason..)

Changing the SPL makes me nervous because I know that a bad BIOS flash can brick a motherboard...And some just don't take.

I followed this link, step by step.

I initially installed JF 1.5, then upgraded several weeks later, to JF 1.5.1.

Two days ago, I upgraded (reflashed, with new ROM) to Ion v.1, and it's MUCH faster then previous ROM's I was using.

Haven't updated the SPL. I also didn't wipe, other then the intial time I got Root.

    So, I can't really answer ? 1, but ? 2, I have Ion, and didn't update SPL.

Sorry I"m not more of an expert. However, following the steps in the link I've provided will get you root in about an hour or less... just go step by step, and it's pretty self explanatory.

Ah thanks. I heard that certain SPL's don't mix with older builds...so yeah...(and by don't mix, I mean they will cause your phone to brick.)

But if you rooted...that part at the bottom tells you to activate the hard SPL.

depends on what rom you choose to use, spl and radio you have.
since you're new to the whole root thing, go with HardSPL and of course the newest radio. and i would suggest flashing JF's recovery img too

SPL is not something to be messed with.
Go with Hard or stock to be safe.

The reason for Haykuro's "special" SPL is because some roms / builds require more space. Haykuro's "special" SPL frees more memory from your G1 so it can fit.

Yessir! That's why I have so much free memory, that "SPL" mixed with a "special" formula from my new ROM.
