Wozniak also lambasted another iconic Apple product, the iPhone, saying that it its proprietary nature and locked service provider, when compared with Google's Android (incidentally the only truly open platform on the market), will hamper its growth in the long run.

this part is so so true, apple is gonna have to loosen the reigns if it wants to keep its spot in the long run. i think they have shown signs of realizing this by removing the NDA read here

don't count apple out the game yet. as the iphone gets better i hope android comes back with a power punch. i hope the two platforms go back and forth like a long ass tennis match. cause in the end that mean better phones for us all. haaa

Then Google and Android should of learned from Apple and not released a product until it surpassed the benchmark that Apple set.

No one is saying that the G1 is not a good phone, it is just not a great phone and in the age of the iPhone, it's seems dated and just doesn't meet the new standards.

I really wanted this device to put the iPhone in it's place but it just doesn't do that.

You seem unnecessarily hung up on the -physical design- of the G1 while failing to realize that under the hood, the phone's hardware is of the most modern available on the market, and far from "dated".

What are you talking about? Read my post I not only talking about the phone's design. As for what's under the hood, what is so technologically advanced about a mechanical keyboard, trackball and buttons. Not to mention a GPS antenna, give ma a break!

Modern doesn't always equal best. If you read my earlier post I am an Industrial Designer and I deal in modern technology all day long. This device is far from modern or best in any way, shape or form.

OK you sound like youre not the brightest bulb in the box! what you said makes no sense! They told everyone along time ago the G1 will not be an iphone clone. then you go buy it anyway!!! Now we gotta listen to your b!tchin! beat it!

Yesterday i went to my sister's house for dinner and i showed my brother-in-law my G1. He has the iphone 3g and we were comparing back and forth. Here are my thoughts:

    • first things first, the iphone is WAYYYY more polished than the G1. obvious statement but has to be understood by people making judgments on these phones iphone has been out for over a year, G1 just one day.

    • Youtube - we downloaded and played identical youtube movie trailer videos. my G1 grabbed the movie much faster but the playback was clearly inferior to the iphone. The iphone screen was filled whereas the G1 had it blackboxed all the way around. Plus when there was text on the screen describing the movie, you could clearly read it on the iphone but it was too "pixelly" and grainy to read the text on the G1. Huge bummer.

    • Calendar - iphone shows the items for the day at the bottom of the screen. G1 doesn't. G1 you have to drill down into the day. Not a huge deal, but much nicer to be able to glance on the screen.

    • App Store - this is to be expected but iphone app store has thousands of apps. Android might have 50 or 60? for example in the games category, iphone had over 1400 games, i think Android has 4 or 5 right now if you count the blackjack game also, the apps for iphone are stored on the 8gb or 16gb of memory. right now, g1 can't be stored on mem card.

    • Visual Voicemail - simply, it's the coolest thing ever and G1 doesn't have it.

    • Widget panes - iphone can have as many as you want, G1 just 3. not a big deal but a limitation.

    • Size - i know the technical specs but in person the iphone looks much better, sleeker, cooler, pimper, futuristic, whatever you want to say . A lot is subjective here obviously but i don't think it's subjective to say the iphone is more compact and has sleeker lines since it is just a continuous rectangle instead of having a chin jutting out

    • Battery Life - he was showing me his iphone after a 12 hour day of moderate use and it still had half it's battery. granted he has 3g turned off always but he haswifialways turned on. my G1 actually died during our comparison and i hadn't use it more than installing some apps and making a 30 min phone call during the day. the battery life NEEDS to be improved through a patch or something. The iphone's screen is LARGER and it lasts that long.

That's all i can remember for now, i'll edit later if i think of stuff. I want to make it clear that i love the G1 and plan to stay on Android phones indefinitely. i think it's the best platform ever. the GPS and google integration with streetview and all that is amazing, and better than any phone that i'm aware of. the camera on the G1 is better than the iphones. Cut and past is good to have And the notification tab at the top on the G1 is so useful.

I also realize that a lot of the G1's shortcomings above can be fixed via updates or are due to it being a day old (like the small number of apps available). I just wanted to share my surprise from last night b/c of all the hype and videos i watched i thought it would kick the iphones butt. Only when i tinked with both for about 3 hours last night did i realize nope, it doesn't. I got a great phone for $179 though and it can only go up from here. Any thoughts from you people or am i just stating the obvious? I'll update if i think of other things we compared that surprised me.
store doesn't have b/c people can't tweak the

    word, good post

apple is def. going to have to relax a little and let developers do their thing, otherwise android comes right along and takes away all the talent.

Not to mention developers will eventually move away from iphone, since they can only make 70% of the revenue, whereas with Android they will make 100%. Apple may not be in trouble right now, but they better think of something quick, because Android is the future. Yea the g1 isn't as pretty or stylish, but to must of us that bought the G1, that's not what's important.

Android=evolution of the phone. It's caveman right now(not even one day old since its release), and already being compared to the iphone. I can't imagine this phone in a year or two.

Definately. I don't want apple to close shop. That's not what I'm saying. I want it to push the next level , so developers and phone makers for Android will say "Oh hell no.." and come back with something even better. Competition always works out for who??? That's right, the consumer.

I think the iphone is a pimp ass phone, and yea I wish the g1 looked better, but eh, its pimp enough for me.
