I've seen conflicting reports within reviews and just plain speculation, so here is the real deal. I've been playing with the G1 for a week now and it took me a good day to figure out the logic...
Any apps you download from the Market will automatically (at least in this beta version of the market) be saved in the G1 device memory. There is currently no option to save it otherwise, it just goes there.
However, if you download .apk app from any url, once the dl has completed and you tap on it in the drop down notification pane it will inform you that the application can only be installed to the
sd card. Voila!
So for instance you would prefer to dl some market app to your sd just dl it directly from the developers website as opposed to the market. There is a preference in applications settings that you must check to allow this first!
There is currently no
file manager, but once someone develops one you could also just copy the apps directly to a sd card and install them from there.
Hope this sheds more light on the misconception.
