Talking Apps running I didn't even open (task-killer)

Got the new HTC Hero (Sprint) and really diggin it. One of the first apps I got was TaskKiller ... based on other peoples recommendations (thanks for that)

However when I open Task Killer to terminate some applications because my battery is dropping off the chart there are applications listed in there I haven't even opened/used. For instance, Sprint Navigation was open last time I used TK and I have not used Sprint Navigation in 3 days!

Anyone know what the deal with this is? Like I said, really like the phone/Android but this seems like a bit of an issue.

y'know... i see a lot of stuff running too

and i'm not really sure what it all is

but i had a soft-reset already - i believe it was from extreme task killing! "some" things just NEED to be running and i think i got carried away

i'm just gonna use my cell phone for right now - yeah, i see a lot of stuff running, but i'm not htat concerned cuz its really not slowing me down

when it starts getting laggy, yeah i'll get out the chopping block - but till then...... i'm hammering away at this thing!

yeah i think on of the only downsides of android, is the running apps, but with a good task manager it shouldnt be a problem. Taskiller is good or for 0.99$ you can get advanced task manager which is amazing.

and with android certain apps such as where, gps, certain widgets etc... once you open them and even if you kill them in a taskmanager they just keep running, idk why its weird.

but eh whatever loveeeeed my G1 love my Sprint Hero more.

    I went from a G1 to a Tour to a Pre to a Hero

    Hero best yet lol

    good good...

yeah, i don't think that's a downside of android (all the running apps) - it was *made* to run all the apps -- it automatically saves states and switches apps off if it gets too bogged down

i think its a downside of the hardware we're running

just look at computers - a new operating system comes out and everyone b!tches and moans about how much of a dog it is... years down the line no one even thinks about it any more

with android, we're just on the second generation of devices, but ifyou notice, its all the same hardware (~500mhz cpu - not much differnece in ram/rom from G1)

after the christmas season you'll see new and more powerful devices and after a while.... i predict ppl won't even worry about whats running or the system resources they have available

So what should be running if you plan to use a task manager app?

i have app manager and taskiller (yes, that's spelled correctly - i checked!ol)

taskiller is the easiest - and looks to be more powerful

    both are good though

    both are free

    and there are others too

but be careful... i've had the phone reset on me cuz i was getting a little too aggressive with it

problem is... i *like* how it remembers the previous state

if you kill an app (say, the browser) - next time you open your browser it opens at the home page, not where you were last

    so that's a downer

if you let stuff run, its a more continuous/all-in-one experience

(hard to find the words for it - sorry)

I understand the concept of applications running in the background so they are quicker to access. However that still doesn't explain why apps which I haven't even opened aka Sprint Navigation are shown to be running when I open up taskiller. Seems a little strange.

    I have also experienced this.

One thing that's killing me is that I can't seem to get rid of Peep. I have it set to update manually and I'm not logged into it, yet it still seems to open and take up anywhere from 3-9MB of RAM.

My first and best purchase was Advanced Task Killer.

The best feature on it in my opinion is the "Auto End" feature, where it will automatically kill all apps not on the "Exclude List" at the interval that you specify.

For example, I have it autokill every hour. I restarted the phone, and noticed which processes/apps were the system/reserved ones, and set those to exclude, along with any other app I didn't want to automatically kill.

Since doing all of this, my experience has been MUCH better and MUCH more smooth. I generally have about 80MB of free RAM at any given time. After a while when apps auto open (due to widgets I think for the most part) it gets down to around 40MB.

Some of the Android apps have memory leaks it looks like, so it's good to clean house on a regular basis. For 99 cents, it's a totally worthwhile investment for Advanced Task Killer to do all of that for me.

Taskiller is good too, I also have that, but it doesn't have the auto end feature that I'm already in love with

The only way to stop apps from auto-running (also after startup too) is link2sd application. I'd read a lot of things about that, many people say it is impossible to stop applications from auto-running even you kill them, the only way is leave them alone, but it is not true. Because i got it with link2sd application's "Freeze" function. Now i have %60 free memory and i dont see them running even in backgound for weeks! You must root your phone first to do this. Go to www.link2sd.info and read about "freeze" function.
