That's weird; we have the family unlimited text messaging plan for $20, so I'm pretty sure that if I canceled my data plan the text messages would continue to flow under the family plan.

Also note that if you have a family text messaging plan, there's no reason to pay $24.99/mo for the data plan. A rep tried to insist that it was bundled but eventually a supervisor agreed that "unlimited text messages plus another 400 text messages" was stupid and discounted the $24.99 plan to something like $19.99.
I blame this man for most programming problems.

I think what they meant is that the $24 data plan used to come with 400 text messages. Early in June they changed that so that it comes with none. I think they were saying if he canceled the data plan, then when he got it back, the 400 texts wouldn't be included anymore.

In response to the original question, I am using a G1 without a data plan and it's great. I have constant wifi on my college's campus, so there's really no need for the data plan. I can do everything I want on wifi.

WoW !!! I got 2 new G1s 4 hours ago (upgrade), I called them up a couple of minutes ago and told them I gave the phones away as gifts... And the lady said OKAY let me just take off the data plans on both the G1s. One minute later she said all done!!!

Before I called, I check tmobile dot com and it said the website said G1 data plans on BOth lines... when I hung up the phone with TMOBILE I went to check it again on tmobile dot com and it was gone!!

Easy as Cake..., I tryed to ask her how it would show up on my account bill, if it would be prorated. She said yes but sounded confused... any help guys?

Yes I use WiFi connection all the time and able to access my Gmail, Android Market, and all other basic functions as if I am using data. But no extra charge because I am using a temporary connection that isnt T-Mobile's

I will get a data plan someday for sure just cant afford it right now

If you get charged it'll be prorated per day.

I turned data plan one day because I reset to factory defaults and needed the data plan to activate the phone. I had it on for 2 days before I turned it off and I got charged $2.50 for the 2 days it was on.
