That's because of the Qualcomm chipset, it happens the same with the HTC Touch Diamond (same chipset) it's very annoying but the phone will do okay
Has anyone tested battery using browser only with 3G speed?
I’m wondering how fast the battery will last if you use the browser non-stop.
Also, the bottom of my G1 starts to get hot (not all the time). I was using GPS this morning to test where I was while I was driving, and bottom started to get really hot. But yesterday I did the same thing, and nothing happened.
I’ve read threads in the past that someone had a similar problem.
Is there a solution to this?

Everything is packed so tightly that, some of the componets don't have any room to breathe or too cool off, therefore it creates much more heat than expected. It's only so much that these phones can do... It's a wonderful machine. I love this phone!
True that, normal nothing to worry about.
I'm waiting a week or so to truely judge the battery - i let mine fully discharge over night - was back up to 80% when i left for work - was at 24% when i got in - after some emailing and mp3 listening.
Im burning up the juice on my phone at the moment, so many things to see and do. Obviously it will use power faster than any non-smartphone,so I don't have a problem with it needing more charges. High capacity batteries will be available soon.
