Android Noob

My first android phone, and I love it! So far, android is superior to everything I've had. There are just a few things that I have yet to uncover

1. Is there a way to definitively quit an application? Eris doesn't exactly have the hardware to be constantly running whichever app I happen to run, and that seems to be how it is. I've been using Advanced Task Manager to kill them, but something tells me that it's not the best thing to be doing.

2. Is there an app that I could use to browse my music collection on my home PC? Pandora and Last.fm are great, but sometimes I'd like to be able to pick a specific song out of my massive library of music (almost 1TB at this point). I don't mind installing server software on my home pc.

3. Is there a way to have the apps use the SD card more than they do? The Eris has very limited space on it itself and I imagine it would run a hell of a lot quicker if the apps were stored on the SD card rather than the internal space, allowing the OS to utilize the full internal space rather than a partition of it.

I am a software engineer, typically in either c/c++/c++0x or Java, on a linux install. I am not a noob to technical stuff and have no problem with these types of things.

1. Not entirely sure about the Eris but guess it works much like the Hero for standard ops. When you leave an app or return to home that app shouldn't keep running. Most of the background app activity is email/social networking/weather/ apps refreshing and just to be certain you could try installing TasKiller (I haven't used Advanced Task Manager so I don't know if it's exactly like TasKiller) as well as carefully setting your refresh schedules.

2. Doubletwist for android has allowed me to amalgamate all my various music libraries. Again, not sure it'll work with the Eris

3. Apps to sd can only be achieved on a rooted phone. You also need to partition your sd card. I haven't followed if there is already rooting info around here for the Eris but a quick search here and/or on xda should put you right.

Refresh schedules? I'm not sure about how it works, but from what I've read android doesn't fully close apps, just sits them in the background and kills them off as it needs resources they are using.

I don't think that Eris has been rooted yet. Would be nice if it happened before my 30 day warranty was up though.

From Music Browsing from your phone you can install TunesRemote... it will allow you to remotely choose songs from your Itunes library and play them... essentially using your phone as a remote control from your itunes in your computer...

There is also imeem that allows you to upload your music to their servers and then streem it to your mobile...
