Yeah u can always go back, I don't think u will but the option will be there.

Sidekick has the best keyboard in the business (except now for the G1)
and was totally stable- it didnt do alot, but what it did, it did well- except for the crappy POS browser.
The android/G1 people didn't hire a Danger guy for nothing- the G1 will be what the SideKick should be.. get rid of your SK- or save it as a collector's item.. but go with the G1
as far as the notifications, im sure the reminders/announcements are as customizable as the SK. i had a sk3 till i got the LX, im selling the LX. You're right to go with the G1
and the sidekick is not for preteens...
Sidekick is a joke. Never had one never wanted one..In fact when I see people with them I'm like wtf? You're a grown man.
Step up. G1 - or anything HTC..
Ok, I have never used a sidekick, but I do have a G1, so in answer to your questions:
1. The set up is very quick and painless, it supports groups (I actually can't find an option to turn groups off, which annoys me), and it can be used at the same time as you are logged in on your computer. You show up as being on a mobile device on your friends' buddy lists.
2. Never used a sidekick keyboard, but right off the bat I was typing pretty quickly with the G1. It beats the hell out of the keyboard on my iPod Touch.
3. You can set it so that AIM IMs vibrate and/or make a noise, and you can set it so SMS messages Vibrate and/or make a noise. You can have it so that each has a different noise, but the vibrate modes are the same. You can also set it so that it neither vibrates nor makes a noise on both, and just shows up in your notification bar.
Hope that helps!
the AIM on the g1 is *close* but not quite as good as the Sidekick.
The thing that sucks is it doesnt show an icon when you're logged in, and doesnt alert you if you get logged off. So that really sucks.
"u can be signed on from ur sidekick and from the computer at the same time"
hmm maybe you can do that with Aim, but I know if u use ICQ thru aim, you can only be logged in from one spot.
You can set all the sounds you need for AIM, BUT it doesnt make IM sounds when you are in a conversation screen (like the SK does) so thats kinda.. not great
Re: the keyboard- its not as good. Its flatter and harder to type on because its so flat. It's fairly close though and im getting used to it- but I'll always think it sucks compared to a chicklet keyboard because, well, those rule.
BTW get a black one, because the issue of not being able to see the characters on the keyboard very well on the silver keys is totally true..
I'm thinking I'm going to HAVE to take mine back for a black one because of it- even though I prefer the bronze color scheme
heh Habitat you keep saying that about the SK- but your messiah G1 is still getting owned by the SK as far as IM goes..

Tons of people are leaving Sidekicks for the G1, myself included. The G1 probably can't compare to the Sidekick YET because the Sidekick is a very mature phone. If you want a device as mature as the Sidekick, don't be an early adopter, i.e. don't get the G1 which is still practically in beta as far as platform maturity goes and expect it to outshine your Sidekick. Sidekicks came out in like the 90's. The G1 came out last week.
That being said, yes the Sidekick and G1 keyboards are extremely similar IMO. The layouts are identical, but the keys are more flush on the G1. Aim on the Sidekick is an actual Aim program, and not an Aim-like interface utilizing the SMS functionality as with the G1. Yes, I liked Aim better on my SKLX.
But my bottom line point is that if you need tried-and-true reliability, please keep your Sidekicks. If you are willing to put up with the toddler years of a device, it's worth it to make that leap of faith to the G1. Remember, there is a lot more potential on an open-source handset than there ever will be on a device that only T-Mobile can make changes to.
Agreed. The Sidekick is for people who have lives. Preteens or not, if you like to stay in touch with people and have a lot of information available at the tip of your fingers, then the Sidekick is probably the best phone you can buy.
It's just coincidence that preteens tend to have lives, and us old geezers locked in our mom's basements bitching about phones on the internet all day don't have any friends. I'm totally kidding.![]()
Well I had a sdk3 and a sdk lx and now ther G1
The keyboard on the G! Is not as nice as the sidekicks
For typing speed. But I'm getting use to the G! More everyday
Now that bad news AIM on the G1 sucks..bad interface is really bad and archaic ! Looking and running BUT the good news the G1 3G rockls and more and more apps in the store so I have mor functionality in my life! More so than with the G1 than any sidekick and the internet wow and the wifi works flawless. And the music player blows the sidekick media playback. Just some thopught to help people answer some of there ?'s
