Default ADP1 vs. Tmobile code unlocked G1

I am new to this forum so i wish to say Hi to everyone ^^. After reading up to page 10 on this forum before posting, I saw that the user Phoom was in a similar dilemma as me. (http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...d-i-get-15369/ ) So admins, if you see this as a double post, please do forgive me and please feel free to merge it with that post ^^.

Anyway, my situation is similar since I am trying to decide between purchasing the developer phone or a tmobile one unlocked with a code. I understand that the developer one is more or less restricted from the AppStore; however, my reason for the purchase is the greater flexibility with an official unlocked one. Or will the code unlocked tmobile version will be just as flexible with regards to use on other carriers? I have read that some people are unable to use gmail since it is unlocked via code, is that true?

I ask this since both my girlfriend and myself are travel abroad for school. My girlfriend is going to Australia and myself to Grenada. By having a factory unlocked phone, I hope that issues with regards to network compatibility will be less. However, will a code unlocked one be the same way?

Also, will have a code unlocked phone prohibit future upgrades OS upgrades of the phone?

I greatly apologize for the numerous questions, but I do wish to ask these as there are many users of this forum who are more informed and knowledgeable than me. Thank you in advance ^_^.

"I have read that some people are unable to use gmail since it is unlocked via code, is that true?"

    Hi,

I use my G1 on Swiss operator and I have no problem with gmail.
I have unlocked my phone with a code.

The only thing who don't work is the MSN client (it's ok with wifi but not with GSM network)

The problem for updating the phone isn't really a problem.
If your GSM operator hasn't signed with google, you don't have the OTA update (over the air) but you can update manually !
    Oups, sorry,

    Hey...you are going to Grenada...nice! =O

My dad's from that place and I've always wanted to go and check it out! =O

As for your questions...updates whouldn't be much of an issue as v1nce has said....

Manual updates are always going to be there! =)

Thank you guys responding ^^. Yea Rozza, I heard the weather there is really nice .

Since you manually update, i guess that is not as much of an issue. But I am looking at the cost factor as well. Even looking at ebay, to find already code unlocked versions are like 390+. There those that claim to be unlocked, but it doesn't say code locked; so I am a bit scared to purchase those. Then I looked at some units that are being sold at regular ones that you can unlock, and those are around 350 as well; so after paying for the unlocking code and such, that comes to $400 as well.

So what would your guy's advice be?

Also, V1nce mentioned that the msn client does not work with gsm but does with wifi. However if you have the dev. version of the phone, does it work then?

The stock im client sucks. I would suggest if you need MSN on your phone to use one of the apps off the market.

As to ebay, unless you can find a phone in mint condition for around 250. Id say you were better off getting the dev version. I have heard too many bad things about ebay to fully trust making a purchase of that size. Plus if you buy the dev phone you get a warranty, if you get it off ebay you might have trouble getting it fixed if it breaks.

One other thing. The dev phone will have root access already, so you can try out the other firmware. If you run into a problem like not being able to see/purchase an app that you really want. You can switch to JF's RC33 firmware and purchase it.

Unlock codes cost like $20. This is the site I used for my G1 and my gf's G1. We're both on ATT. I was a little bit iffy about the site and used a cc just to be safe. However we both had our G1s unlocked within a few hours.

We both also got our G1s off of eBay.
