    Default Wi-Fi-to-Phone Signal Converter

    Hey guys,

I don't know if this is possible, but a cool app could be one that could convert Wi-Fi signal to phone signal in an area where you have Wi-Fi but no phone service (like I do right now with my G1)! I have no experience with programming whatsoever, but I know that it would be pretty convenient and it would definitely be something I'd be willing to pay for.

I'm afraid thats not possible at all. WiFi and Cellular service are two very different technologies, they both run on completely seperate frequencies, WiFi is designed for short range and fast communication, Cellular the exact opposite.

What you could do with is something called VoIP, you can route voice calls over the Internet. This is (hopefully) under development by several companies, so just keep your ear to the ground on that one

Yeaaaah, I'm pretty sure the G1 shipped with provisions to block VoIP users/traffic. What the OP is really asking for is UMA service or a kind of "tunnelled" cellular service that uses the information superhighway, or the internets as you youngins call it. Unfortunately, Tmo decided to not implement UMA on the G1. I had it on my Curve 8320 and it was only so-so. I had a lot of dropped calls but others had no trouble with it. Meh.

My suggestion is to pepper VoIP providers like Skype, Vonage etc etc with requests for G1 proggies. Where there's a public 'will', there's a way.

Does hot spot at home work with the G1? Isn't that a service that does exactly what you need?
