Where can i learn more about rooting my phone?

I have been thinking about rooting my g1 but i have been reading a lot of the information on this site and a lot of it is still confusing. I know how to root my phone and stuff but i dont seem to know what exactly im doing to my phone. Could someone post a link on what i am doing to my phone or more information on rooting it and stuff like what the radio and spl are. I just dont want to jump into it and not know what the hell im doing and competely rely on other people to get my phone to work.

What your doing to the phone? Simple, your just installing a new Operating System onto it, just like installing linux on a windows computer. Only this "new" OS is just a modified version of the original. The original OS treats you like a kid and will not let you do much to it, rooted phones you can change anything, even make changes that will break the phone. The "radio" is just software that controls the radio hardware (the cellular, wifi, bluetooth and gps circuits) the SPL basically controls the booting of the phone. When you turn on the phone, the SPL starts, finds the OS files and boots/starts the OS program. The stock SPL and custom OS ROMs do not play nice together, you may need a new one.

edit: Ohh, and what things would cause the phone to brick?

Mostly actual hard bricking (where you can't even get into the recovery screen) happens when you interrupt some critical step, by power loss or doing something stupid like pulling the SD card while flashing. Doing some steps out of order might do it, or may just soft brick it (will only boot into recovery, but is fixable) There is a modified SPL that you need to run Hero builds that will only run on some phones, I think its either an earlier or newer hardware version. Installing that on a phone it will not work on will brick it. I think there is trouble when reverting back from that SPL to a normal one also. Basicaly the only steps that can not be recovered from is if you have a problem, is when flashing the SPL or recovery program.
