They are not in a directory.. they are on the Launcher.apk under \res\drawable

I know you can replace the wallpapers there with your own ( I've done this before) but I'm not sure If you'll be able to add more wallpapers to the gallery without replacing the default ones.

And remember to follow the general rule of Linux-based operating systems: if there's an EASY way to do something (long pressing photo and selecting as background), better use the easy way. Chances are the hard way (replacing default pics) will break something.

Or Menu/Long Press on the home screen, select wallpaper and find your picture.

I don't think you understood his question correctly... He is not asking how to set the wallpaper, he is asking how to add wallpapers to the Wallpaper Gallery (Home Screen > MENU > Wallpaper > Wallpaper gallery). The only way to add wallpapers there is by putting them on the Launcher.apk, Apotheo over at XDA figured out how to do it:

I don't think there's an easier way to do this unless there's an application like billy_b0b said that does it but I really doubt there is one.

As of right now you cant add more without figuring out the right xml to edit and how to edit it. I think most of the dev work is focusing on more important features so I dont think there will be any updates on this subject anytime soon until someone takes their dev abilities and applies them to themes. But in all honesty, I would assume that soon there will be a much easier ways of changing themes (think a theme changing app) and once we make it to that step adding wallpapers or at least the ability should follow.

For my themes I just replace the default images with with my own but retaining the original files name. Just make sure you make them the same size and name.
