Speed of ROMs

Well, had to get a warranty replacement for my G1, so now I need to re-root everything.

Thing is, the stock phone seems to be just as fast as the custom ROMs, did google set the CPU scaling to 528mhz or something? True, I have not installed any apps, being that they are still in my ext partition on the SD card, and I can nandroid back to where I was when I get rooted again. My card is only a class 2, so was that killing my speed on cyan's ROMs? I didn't use swap, I don't like the idea that it may kill the SD card. Besides compcache is on by default. I'm tempted to not even bother rooting again, though I would miss it. The speed was the main reason to root, followed by apps2sd, and the rest was just bonus.

Also...

How hard would it be to make a .zip file that contains the newest recovery image 1.6? I want to be able to flash the newest recovery image without needing to use the terminal emulator, the console in the 1.4 recovery would not let me write to the recovery, being that its in use. I still have the old .zip of the old recovery, I was thinking I could replace the file and edit any other files in it to get it turned into the newest as a .zip, then just resign the file and flash. The reason is because, the older nandroid does not work with the new nandroid backup files, (in my experience) and I want to go straight from getting root to just using nandroid to get back to Cyanogen 4.1.9999

One more thing... If slower cards can cause slowdowns, it that case it would be better to run apps from the internal memory. Seeing as how the internal is limited, it would be nice if we could pick and choose which programs stay internal and which move to the SD card. I'm sure pushing files to different directories would do that, but that is a bit of a pain. A program that does that automatically with a GUI would be ideal. How feasible would something like that be, and would anyone else be interested in that?

Well I re-installed many apps and added several widgits to the home screen. Still pretty fast. It feels much faster than the pre cupcake/donut android version I had before rooting. Battery life sucks compaired to root, but I just now reinstalled power manager, so we shall see I guess.

its always fast when youre comin off a wipe.

i think thats why people think these roms are so fast, cuz they basically wiped and started over with a clean phone. give an install 4 months and watch it lag.

my wife got the 1.6 update on her g1, while mine is rooted, and right after she got it i was excited to check out the speed, went to the homescreen, and watched it hang there for 5 seconds. so much for that.

cyno has the apps2sd thing going for it. thats definitely part of the speed thing- the more apps you have eating the int memory, the slower the phone runs. if you can store the apps on the SD that will certainly help speed.

other than that, clearing caches and doing an ocassional wipe will keep it fast, thats about all i expect from a G1.

the next gen Android phones need to be alot beefier with the processor and internal available memory.
