Yep, big time power waster, but I have to say that I like the idea of an animated backround, I think the fishtank/ android iphone love scene, would make for a cool animated background
The practical use of a screen saver would be when you want to share the G1's internet with your laptop or desktop via USB. It happens when the G1 goes to sleep it disconnects from WiFi or Edge or 3G, so to keep it alive and share the internet you need the screen saver. Also select the option Stay awake from Manage Application's Development menu of G1 would make it awake.
On other notes, yes, we can share G1 internet with desktop or laptop pretty well with no limitations of anykind. There is a TetherBot.apk http://graha.ms/androidproxy/Proxy.apk application which will help you do it.
Here are setup instructions to share T-Mobile G1 internet with your laptop of desktop.
1. Install the Android USB driver. http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip
2. Enable debugging through USB
3. Set to Stay awake then connect the G1 to Computer via USB
4. Start TetherBot in phone and Start Socks.
5. On windows, download this app http://graha.ms/androidproxy/AdbWin.zip
and then from cmd prompt enter: adb forward tcp:1080 tcp:1080. This is a deamon service that runs in background. After you execute the command you can close the cmd window. To stop the service, enter adb kill-server command.
6. Download and Start the Proxifier http://www.proxifier.com/distr/ProxifierSetup.zip (shareware application, 31 day trail is available) on Windows and choose option -> Proxy Settings -> Add, localhost, port: 1080, Socks version 5
7. Enable any screen saver app on G1 to save the LCD screen. One such app is Bedside (not bad, but ok) available from Market.
Enjoy!
Best,
Nath V.G.

I just released a G1 Screensaver to the Market - VirtualSheep
Whenever you plug in your phone, the screensaver activates. whenever you unplug, it ends.
The screensaver is a slideshow of the most popular Flickr photos (some of the best photographs in the world!)
If you have your own Flickr account, you can set the slideshow to show your own pictures.
It also has a Google News feed that floats on top of the slideshow to keep you up to date. VirtualSheep is great for people that leave their phone plugged in to the computer or wall at work, school or home.
Check out some screenshots here:

See it in the market by clicking this link from your G1:

I think my g1 is great but why does it not already support animated screensavers and wallpapers (and possibly other smart phones, I have no clue if iphone or blackberry does). I mean, my six year old Sony Ericsson phones can. I know it would kill battery life and all that but I just thought it was a pretty standard feature. Also PDAnet is a much easier and generally better tethering app for Android. Just thought I'd add that as I thought Tetherbot was frustratingly complicated in comparison.
