    Default quick question on ringtones

got mytouch finally. i tried to set individualized ringtone for the people that calls me, but when i got into the contact and try to change the ringtone, it will only show the ringtones from the phone. it doesn't give me an option to select my own personal ringtones from the microSD card. i want to be able to hear different customized ringtone when different ppl calls me.

any idea on how to do that? cuz i even tried to change the ringtone through the music player side, but the ringtone only changes to be used on all incoming calls.

    can someone plz help? thx~

try ringdroid or 'rings extended' app, there are probably more in the market.

The way Android works, unfortunately, is that an mp3 is not recognized as a ringtone until it has been set as the default ringtone. What I mean is that when you first get the phone and go to set a ringtone, it will only show the default ringtones that came with the phone. If you set an mp3 through the music player as the default ringtone and then go to set a customized one, the new one will show up. Sadly, you have to do that with every mp3 you want to use in order for them to show up in the list. It is cumbersome and annoying to do so.

The way around that as paul mentioned is to download "rings extended" from the market. It allows you to set any mp3 on your phone as a ringtone without the annoying process. Just install that app, go into your contact list and try to select a custom ringtone, it will ask how you want to do that, select the new program and it will give you a list of all of your music and allow you to select one.

    Hope that helps.

The other option is to create the following directories at the top level of the sdcard:

    alarms
    notifications
    ringtones

Any MP3 files placed in those locations will then appear as a standard ringtone in associated applications. The only downside I have seen reported is that it takes additional time to access the file. That means an incoming phonecall may not play the ringtone as soon as possible, especially if you don't have a fast SD card. I don't seem to observe that, although I have an 8GB Class 4 card.
