Default Question: Sprint's Hero or Moment Hacking

I am torn between which phone to get. As a premier customer, I get a phone at new customer pricing once a year. My time for this is now and I would like to get a new Android phone. Currently, I have a Palm Pre and feel locked down with it.

I like the specs of the Moment, but the Hero has a great OS with multi-touch. I know that since I am dealing with Android phones, software and software features are just a "root away".

If the Moment is root-able and community ROM's are coming, then I think the Moment is the phone to get. If not, the Hero is a fantastic phone but, it will still lack the hardware keyboard and have a dated processor.

My questions are: Is the Moment something the community is going to develop for? Is there already work being done on ROMs for either device? Which phone would you guys go after if you were in my position?

haha I was in the Exact same situation as you are just 2 days ago, I went with the Samsung Moment Google phone.

I have yet to put it down, IMO it is much more functional with the slide out keyboard. I am not knowledgeable about the technical aspects or future upgrades, but I do know that the processing speed is very nice.

I really like SenseUI and the multi-touch features of the Hero. Not to mention, Android 2.0 is coming to the Hero.

There is no word on 2.0 for the Moment. I could live without SenseUI but, I am not sure about living without multi-touch.

I currently have a Palm Pre. It is a nice phone and very hackable yet, it's App Catalog is extremely limited and the SDK is lacking is many areas. I love the browser on the Pre. I love many aspects of the UI. I don't like the cheap plastic feel of the phone and the slider is a mess.

Just to let everyone know, I went with the Samsung Moment. It is an excellent phone! It was the slide-out keyboard and 800Mhz processor that made the sale. SenseUI is a very attractive, but I have hope that a more standard Android install will allow for faster upgrades and better application compatibility.

I've installed PandaHome and find it helpful and the latest update made things very smooth. NewsRob (Google RSS Reader), Swift (Twitter) and Dizzler (Music) are my most used apps and are much better then what are available on the Pre. Pandora is just as good on Android as WebOS.

Although Mutli-touch was great on the Pre, it is rarely something I miss. I will admit that the browser on the Pre was a better browser then Android's stock app, the browser on Android is still a good browser and very comfortable to use. Android also has more browser choices and each one seems to just be getting better.

The Android Market has more apps then I could have hoped for, although the app needs much improvement.

I am very happy with my decision to move from the Pre to the Moment!

lorddavon, just to reaffirm your decision with the moment, zefie over at:

    Samsung Moment Forums

    and

    PPC Geeks

has gotten root access to the phone... there's still a little more work to do, but it's promising.
