Problem with rooting my G1

So I finally decided to root my G1. I figured I should do the one-click method instead of downgrading to RC29, and manually updating the radio and SPL crap. So I'm currently running Donut 1.6, and I found out that I will have to downgrade to Cupcake 1.5. I put the update.zip file on my sdcard, went into recovery mode, and attempted to apply the update pressing Alt+S. Installed for a second, then about halfway through, I saw the message 'Installation Aborted'. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

er.. i've rooted twice (i lost root last weekend flashing something right before bed; bad idea). i used this:

sorry, i'm not too familiar with the 1-click method, but i do believe to get back onto cupcake, you still have to use the dreaimg.nbh file to get back on rc29, then flash the kila-ota... file to get cupcake.

yep. cyanogen is awesome. lpm me if you have any problems with rooting. you are using the cyanogen link i sent you, right? if you are, there's a few things you should do after you're rooted, like get amon ra 1.6.2, danger spl, new radio, etc.

the one click method is kind of out of date but still possible. i dont recommend it. youll have a hard time with everything else because you will never get the chance to learn. anyways, dcheng11 knows whats up. im sure that you can get some great help there

Thanks. Cyanogen is like 1.6 on steroids. It's that fast! I also partitioned my sd card for apps2sd. Pretty sweet. I always use Amon Ra ^w^

soooo i think im gonna root my G1 tonight. But im kind of new to the whole thing, the cyanogen wiki pages seems pretty straight forward. Whats up with amon ra, danger spl, and a new radio?

The Amon RA is a custom recovery, you can partition your sd card, make a complete backup of your phone and use it to restore your phone if something goes wrong. The danger spl will give you a little more internal memory, but you won't need it on Cyanogen, only on the Hero roms. Also the danger spl is about the only way you can brick your phone, if it's not done in the proper sequence. The new radio will help with your reception, depending on how new your phone is you might already have it.
