Yeah good idea however the pattern to unlock thing is good enough for me. it stops anyone getting into my phone into the first place.
A cool app would be a password protect where each person could choose what apps that they want a password for. I like my email and youtube site to have a password so if anyone uses my phone they couldn't access it. A decent approach would be a popup window that comes up when an individual chooses a protected app. I would even consider less than 2 numbers or alphabet as a possible password. It could be bigger but I think making the password a possible small option doesn't make it a hasstle to use. A person could adjust this in their settings and once they picked a password, if they forget than they can answer 3 questions to retrieve their password. Would be nice if 1 of thr question was user generated. Sometimes the questions are pretty obvious to anyone who knows them.

The only problem with that is people don't always want to unlock their phone evertime they use it. With the OS option obviously people who choose the G1 will use their phones a great deal. Then you have the problem with kids or friends who want to use your phone but you either have to give them the password so you don't have to bothered all the time or you have to unlock it.
If you have the option of password protect with certain apps this gives the user more privacy option with less hasstle. Even a possible future option of password protect on IM's of specific usernames could be an added plus. Whether its business or personal if would be cool to have.
