New user needs help please

Hi, im new to the whole Android/G1 thing and i need help, ive been reading through pages and pages of old post about the builds and everything and i checked out the chart, it seems like the JACHero is the way to go (correct me if im wrong) the only problem is, i know nothing about how to install it or about the actual phone itsself, a friend is going to give me his g1 and im interested in installing one of these builds but i wouldnt know where to start. is there an (updated) step by step on how to do this? i also dont know the whole terminology when it comes to it i see apps2sd and stuff like that. Please help me, dont make fun

first step is you need to root(jailbreak) your phone before you can use all those builds ....

by the way , i think cyanogens builds are the best , definately the fastest !

no , cyanogens build is not hero , that is why its faster . but you could put on a hero theme !

how does running a hero theme compare to the native rom?

Running a Hero theme, right now, is preferable for your average user, than running a custom Hero build.

There's been some great progress made with the Hero builds, but they aren't "there yet" in my opinion.

Still quite laggy and the things you do to resolve that (ie using Swapper) will reduce the lifespan of your sd card. Great to play around with, but not for everyday use in my opinion, especially compared to JF1.51 or Cyanogen, which are very stable and very fast.

Hi, so I'm back... with a quick question, i rooted the phone successfully but I'm at Version 1.0.... can I get that up to 1.5?

Flash either the JF 1.51 rom (from jf.andblogs.net ) or the Cyanogen Mod rom to get to the 'stock' 1.5 with root. There are other roms based on 1.5 out there but CM is probably the best you want to use.
