Question Need help self-hosting Android apps.

Hi, everyone. I'm trying to self-host my android apps, so that a user can click on a link to download and install the app. I saw this done at http://chompsms.com/main/install_chomp. When I try have a link to a .apk file, when click on it in Android, the download manager says "Cannot download. The content is not supported by the phone.". Does anyone know how to self-host? Thanks

two things i'm not sure about.

one if you can have it automatically install. i assume you'd still have to go through the allow process with the package manager.

two is an apk a supported file type for download with out say a program like download crutch (i imagine it is, but haven't downloaded one from an outside source directly to my phone in awhile.)

but ignoring the first issue, and assuming the second isn't a problem, wouldn't it just be a direct link to the file?
