hey gasbot, when you do this do you have to redo the commands for each new app you install?
i probably could get the answer by reading that thread, but I'd rather ask you!
So I just received my Transcend 8GB Class 6 microSD card today and decided it was time to see how the sd card app hack worked. For reference, here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468959
So far everything seems to be working beautifully. I've run the apps that I already had installed and they work just as fast as before. I also went and installed an app from the market and it works just as you'd expect. So far I can't say that I've noticed a performance drop in the least.
I would definitely suggest having a class 6 card especially if you're going to do this hack.
Looks like I freed up around 15MB or so, maybe a little bit more. I'm going to move the caches over to the SD card as well and see how much that frees up.

So how much storage do you have left on the phone? Is it the full 70mb?
No, you don't get back all of the room because any databases or cache's that the applications use are still on your phone's internal memory. You can symlink the /data/data directory, but I've heard of people running into weird issues when doing this so I would advise against it.
After moving the browser/maps/streets/market cache over to the sd card I now have 41MB free. You can also move individual apps' cache like imeem, steel, etc. i used the instructions at this link for the commands required:
http://modmygphone.com/wiki/index.php/Caches_To_SD_Card
Note, that when trying to copy the cache files dir in the maps instructions you may get some weird error saying that it couldn't preserve the permissions on the sdcard. I'm not sure what causes that as I know I was in root while executing the command, but either way I just kept going, deleted the cache on the internal memory, ln -s'd it over to the sdcard and maps works perfectly fine.
I only use astro to back up my apps and I have 37MB of memory on my phone. I have about 32 downloaded apps off the market. can anyone explain why my memory is close to his and I don't run my apps off the sd card?
I'm pretty sure it's something like he has a lot more apps than I do or something.
Uuuh. I don't think so. how do you do that? All I know is that I've backed up all my apps and have deleted history, cookies and such from both steel and normal browser a couple of times.
Cool Gas. Keep us up to date on your application performance over time. My one fear with this hack is that the SD card's limited read/write life won't last for very long with app data being constantly read from and written to it.
Also, I got that weird error that you are talking about while moving the Map cache to the SD card at:
It's good to know that issues are not likely.Code:busybox cp -a files /sdcard/cache/files/maps
I have been running apps for over a week from my sd card with no change in performance. I wiped the phone 100%. Then moved the apps to sd. Then all the caches I could. I had like high 54mb available after I first moved everything over there. Since then I have dropped to 47mb. I presume that is because somewhere on the phone there are caches related to some of the many many many apps I have downloaded. Eventually I will track them down. and move them. I didn't move the data/data over either, most reports are that is slows things down....all in all the phone is faster than it ever has been. Everyone should do this. It baffles me why the phone didn't come like this.....
