I'm wirelessly tethering through my G1!

I made basicly this exact thread yesterday and got only 2 replies. Oh well.

Ok so I got this to connect to my laptop with vista no problem but when I tried to tether to my Nintendo DS, it found the G1 hotspot but coudn't connect to it.

And when I tried on my PSP it didn't even see the hotspot at all.

Any ideas what's wrong?

I'm guessing that those devices don't support ad-hoc networks very well.

I would try searching around Google and see if anyone else has been able to use ad-hoc networks on the PSP or DS.

Here is a problem I have run into. After I su and type:

tar xf /sdcard/tether-1.6.tar

I get the errors:

tar: cannot create directory 'data/local/bin' : File exists
tar: cannot remove old file data/local/bin/tether: Not a directory.

I have a theory that the program "Tetherbot" may be causing the conflict. It was the proxy tether application that came out months ago before this iptables method became popular. I'm going to try uninstalling and fiddling with some add/remove directories that should work. But if not I'm getting this question out there. Did anyone else run into this problem?

Yeah, that's probably what's going on. Try doing this:

su
cd /data/local/bin/
rm tether
cd /
tar xf /sdcard/tether-1.6.tar
tether start

Alright I'm still having trouble with:

Here' my question for you. Did you unpack the .tar file and put it on the SD card or did you put the .tar file itself on the card?

Thanks I got it... Actually /bin was gone and so was /tether. I had to rm /bin and /tether to get it to install. I think when I wiped my phone and immediately moved my apps to the sd card had something to do with it. It was all screwy. But Im pumpin now.

Hmm. Sorry i couldn't help you out.maybe do a soft reset and try again, but i really don't know. Also make sure you are following the steps after that to allow ad-hoc connections in network settings.

No worries Honda, I thank you for tyring to get me this far. Only thing that is frustrating is that after I enter all the commands I DONT get any error messages. Im sure I'm just missing something small. I'll try it again later.

I did get:
insmod: init_module '/system/lib/modules/wlan.ko' failed (file exisist)

dnsmaq: failed to bind DHCP server socket: address already in use

But im sure that was because I had entered #tehter start twice before stopping it.

i finally got it working yeeeea!!! man I was cracking my head open like a week and a half ago trying to figure out how to enable the ad hock on my macbook...nd i couldnt get it to work nd I was a bit confused so i just gave up. but i seen how easy Gasbot put the instructions so i gave it a shot and BAM its working! im using my 3g network now and boy is it fast. today has been a good day for my g1, i got the new jf v.1.4 w/ multi-touch and now this.. woooow now my g1 is off the hook.. thanks Gasbot for the ez set up!!

Why hasn't anyone turned this into a GUI app for the general public yet? I imagine this would be a very simple app to implement for an experienced developer, such as GasBot (hint hint!) and Bratag (hint hint!)

Can someone upload the tether-1.6.tar file here, or rehost it elsewhere?

It does not seem to be available from the site listed in the first post. At least, I haven't been able to download it, either via my phone or on a separate laptop on a separate network.
