I have rc30 and root!

Thanks for everyone's help on getting this to work. Even tho there were no direct answers, the quick replies made me keep thinking. Turns out there was a problem when I built my custom kernel. I have written a how 2 on my blog. I've never been very good at writing, however, I hope that my experience will help others.

The command that google tells you to do when running ubuntu would probably work just fine, and I actually have a list of 8 commands, one of them works, and as soon as I figure ouch which one I'll update my blog post.

I will definately be back here often. I think the next thing I want to do it hack my phone. I just don't want to loose the tmo functionality, I use every part and feature of this phone far too often.

Just got my phone last week RC30, reverted to RC29, and jumped to JF1.41RC30 and I'm lovin it.

I followed these directions almost to a T (followed from a link on one of JF's post)

Only change is, in step 12, download telnet from market.

Can't wait for RC33!

I'm a total n00b when it comes to tech related stuff, but I am really trying to learn. I tried to find the modified update to accompany the modified recovery.img, but I can't seem to find one that works. I may have waited too long to try to figure out how to tether my phone, but I feel totally lost. Perhaps there is another way or a new update?

I have no clue what I am doing wrong, but after I input:

cat /sdcard/recovery.img > recovery.img

I always get this:

cannot create /system/recovery.img:read-only file

Anyone? Everything else works fine upto this portion, and I have no idea what i am doing wrong!
