You need to set Windows Explorer to Show Extensions - then you'll see the full filename filename.zip where you can simply change it to filename.apk or anything else.
okk so i need to change this zip file to apk, i've read that you should rename it but everytime i put the "apk" at the end of the name of the file it appears like this on my g1 ("Filename".apk.zip) instead of ("filename".apk)

use astro file manager and change the extension right on the phone . then you could just use it(astro) to install the apk also
