Ok so Cyanogen seems to be the way to go.

At the risk of sounding like a total n00b, how do you install the builds and roms?

And what apps would people suggest as being essential? Apps2SD & caches2SD seems the ones so far, but what about others?

Oh and any hints of partitioning the SD card for caches etc would be good.

Are you rooted or not? If so I would recomend Cyan recovery 1.4 first.

No I'm not rooted as yet. I'm trying to gather all the info before I start the process.

The reason I have been asking is that I cannot find 1 single thread which shows everything. If I actually find all the info I may try to condense it into a single post.

Does the Cyan recovery 1.4 partition the SD card for you?
How do you install a custom ROM?
How do you install the custom themes?
Do you have to use a special marketplace?

What we really need on this board somewhere is a 'Rooting for Dummies - From start to themed finish'

It does seem that everyone assumes just because they know how to do everything that everyone else should as well.

their are lots of rooting for dummies out there.
    search for root made easy

follow that. you'll realize that you're what we need is a root to themed finish is a unnecessary because it's the same steps once you're rooted.

    1. No , but you can partition through the recovery(its pretty easy) . The rom does apps2sd automatically if your sd card has a partition .
2 . Either rename update.zip and install it through recovery or ,with cyans recovery 1.4 , you have the option to apply any zip file from sd so now you don't even have to rename .
    3.same way as a rom
    4.special marketplace ? Where ?

OK, last one from me on this subject (hopefully)

Step 1. The Root of all evil

    http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...de-easy-11825/

Step 2. The Partition of Doom

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543985

Can anyone suggest the code to give me a 1gb ext4 partition instead of the 512 that this (sdparted -efs ext4) gives?

    Step 3. Recovery Position

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...23#post3915123

    Step 4. Cyanogen v3.6.8.1 FTW

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537204

or if you fancy a change

    http://db.androidspin.com/android_build_information.asp

    Step 5. Theme-tastic

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=450

I'm considering this one. Any thoughts? Looks like a lot to install to get the look

What about SPL/Nandroid/SwitchROM/Radio? Any advice? Are they needed?

Does this pretty much cover the process from start to finish?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I need to be sure before I do this as I cannot afford to brick my handset

Thanks for all the patience everyone!

Oh and I was alomost ready to root when I saw this

    http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/SPL

This talks about updating the SPL & Radio before you start the process.
