There is a Chinese input method from, I believe, HTC that allows the user to enter Chinese characters by drawing across an input box on the screen, so Google's framework allows for this. I haven't seen an English one yet, though.
I am sure this idea must have been raised before, but it is a shame the G1 doesnt give you the option when using the onscreen keyboard, to switch to an empty space where you can handwrite the letters/numbers/symbols you want.
Older phones like the sony ericson p910i used to have it, although with a stylus, and it worked great. With the lovely touch screen of the G1, surely this would be an easy and intuitive way to type on the screen without opening the keyboard?
At the very least it would give you another method of input for the phone, and this extra variety is never a bad thing.
Unfortunately, because Google havent released this, any sortof an app which does it (unless it can someone tie it to the onscreen keyboard itself) will not be able to do it for every instance where you can input text while using the phone, it would instead by like the 'Steel' browser pre cupcake, or 'ChompSMS'
But if someone could tie this in to the G1 cupcake onscreen keyboard, that would be pretty amazing (since I am not a dev, I have no idea about the feasability of this).

skip to "1:10" in the video.
i know it's not exactly the thing you were looking for, but at least we know the possibilities are palpable--instead of hiding in code, waiting to be found.
Hmm, to clarify, is the input method being metnioned one that ties into the operating system and so allows you to use it whenever the onscreen keyboard normally pops up, i.e. anywhere where you can enter text/numbers/symbols?
This video, anyone have a link?
It seems that along with the universal search feature in android 2.0 operating system, there will also be handwriting recognition built in:
