Agreed, and multiple page visits will be very slow, especially if the person is subscribing to several feeds. It would also be expensive in terms of data consumption for those on limited data plans. Oh well, just an idea :-)

It would be nice if Google did release an official API that provided more features and automatically synched with Reader, or better yet they just released their own app!

One thing I had thought of is instead of opening a new browser window, it could open a webview onto the google reader site. It should be able to login automatically using the same auth token I use for the API. It might be possible to update the widget when the webview is closed too.

After some feedback from the guys over at xda-dev:

I changed the background to a standard one from Google:

Just uploaded it to the market. If you search for "reader widget" it should come up. Please download and rate it.
    Thanks

having a slight issue - when I clicked on the widget, i only got a black screen - if i pressed back, I could briefly see the "select application" window asking me to chose the default browser or steel, but it disappeared before i could click it each time.

Fixed by selecting a different web shortcut and then selecting and saving the default action

Someone said on the market that it does not work well with dxtop and that it bogged down the phone. Anyone else had this?

It shouldn't slow anything down as it doesn't do that much work and launches its own thread to hit Google Reader and process the XML.
