    Default G1 as universal remote?

Hey, if gmote works and now there's a garage door opener.... why not a universal remote in the house? I'd love to show off that I can turn the tv on and off or start up a dvd.

I guess this would open up the door for gated communities as well.

well the remote app for the garage door is network based. basically that app accesses a secure network your garage door is connected to on the net and then you get access to that through your android device.

so unfortunatly you would have to have your tv connected to the net and have an app that can control it via a pc in order to do this through your android device.

i know slingbox can do this, so maybe if the slingbox app comes out, you can control it through your android as the slingbox app has a remote function built in.

Well as far as DVD goes... i know that the PS3 controllers and remotes all operate via blutooth. If the developers ever actually release those parts of the SDK for developers you could make a playstation remote that could control your dvds/bluray discs, or double as an in-game controller as well.

I'm personally more interested in controlling movies... as I watch a LOT of them on my ps3.

to be a universal remote (in today's home entertainment devices), you will need to have IR. IR does not come with G1, it's possible that some device mfg create a miniUSB to IR emitter/transceiver and then someone will have to make android drivers for it.

The bluetooth idea for televisions isnt a new one. Bluetooth adds some benefits of not being limited to directional infrared technology. Bluetooth would offer a larger radius and you could potentially shut off your tv from another room (like your bedroom if that's where you happen to charge it). The tv of course would have to support bluetooth which I am not sure is happening just yet.

    Good feedback

i would still rather use IR over bluetooth... granted you may have a larger "radius" because line of of sight would not be an issue, but when are you needing to change the channel on your tv (other than volume) when you're not in line of sight?

not only is IR a lot less strain on batteries, it also can have a much longer range... my current sony LCD can catch my IR remote from over 50 feet away in optimal lighting conditions... granted i'll never use it that far, but bluetooth is too much of a battery drainer

Can the G1's display emit IR colors? If so, an app could just be programmed to flash the combination the TV needs on the G1's display. Otherwise I'm not sure how you'd get an IR signal out there. I know quite a few Japanese phones have IR emitters but most American phones don't (including the G1).

sorry to say, but you can't just emit infrared from a non infrared source... plus if they could, i'd rather have the technology to emit lasers from my screen to hurt people that try and touch my phone...

only way is having IR port on your phone, similar to what you see on your remote controls for a tv

Yeah that would be awesome but I agree that a mini-usb ir thing would be a lot more practical. This sounds like a good idea!

and maybe in the future it would turn off my lights and everything.

    How intense would this be.

    Love the G1 so far!
