Future of custom ROMs

At this point, there is so many tutorials, videos, and forum discussions, its pretty easy for any G1 user to root and install custom ROMs.

But what is going to happen with new phones? Are we stuck hoping that someone (google/HTC) "screwed up" and allowed rooting?

What about when Android makes it to netbooks? What are the chances of having customized ROMs for these little guys?
