Is your phone rooted? If not you will have to root it first.
Sorry if this has been answered, but I've searched high and low and can't find any way to that works...
So I've got my G1, and want to put Cynanogen's ROM on it, so I went through his tut and flashed the latest radio, ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip, and recovery image, signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip, to then be able to flash cynanogen on there, but whatever way I try to flash a new image, it always says Installation aborted in the recovery console!
Is it simply not possible to flash to cynanogen from the 1.6 firmware? I can't even flash to an older official radio/firmware!
Any help, please?

It's not rooted no, but I can't see how to root it without having a different recovery image, which gives me 'Installation aborted' when I try...
For example, if I put 'cm-recovery-1.4.zip' on my sdcard, renamed to update.zip, and try to flash it, it says installation aborted. Am I doing it wrong?
Actually, I only have cm-recovery-1.4.IMG, not zip, but I can't flash that from terminal because I don't have root priveleges...

You can root with your stock recovery console, then you can put Cyan 1.4 recovery and flash his roms. Here are a cpouple of links on rooting.

Thanks for the links - one question though:
They talk about checking your build number to see what the next step should be, but my build number doesn't resemble those at all. My build number is "dream_devphone-userdebug 1.6 DRC83 14721 test-keys"
So what's my build number in an RC## format?
Go to settings > about phone > at the bottom of the page is your build number. Should be something like DRC63. That's a new build and they haven't updated there build numbers yet on the rooting guides.
I've hit a problem with getting root. Following this part of the guide:
I open my telnet client, I get a half line of odd characters then a '#', type the first line of the commands, then I get a new line with a '##' prompt.
- Download recovery.img and copy it to your SD card (see the previous instructions on how to copy from your computer to your Phone's SD card).
- Download the Hard SPL and copy the zip file to the SD card.
- All files must be on the root of your SD card.
- Restart your phone. Wait for your phone to start up fully and show the home screen.
- After your phone starts up, hit the enter key twice, type "telnetd" and press enter. (Yes, it will start up a contact search, don't worry. Just type it.)
- Download an Android "Telnet" application from the Market and connect to localhost.
- If you connect successfully, you will have a root prompt "#".
- Type the following into Telnet (these commands will give you root access easier in the future):
- mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
- cd sdcard
- flash_image recovery recovery.img
- cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
Now you have root!
I put in the rest of the commands, but I still don't have root (check by typing su into terminal)
Any ideas why it's not working? The first bit worked, now I'm on RC7.

not a 100 percent sure, but after # you'll need to type
su
then hit enter then follow the rest of the commands. you may also have to allow super user access.
Well I got root to work, then flashed to RC8, then used FlashRec to get the cynanogen recovery flasher, then flashed in Cynanogen Mod 4.199 (the latest one) and rebooted, but it's been sitting on the 'G1 T-Mobile' first splash screen forever...is it hung? Or does it just take ages?
