But when i try to go into my text messages i get nothing but force closes.and all my contacts are showing up as ... What went wrong? I wiped before i restored.
Wipe, reflash, and use the apps2sd app.
Do not use the data.img from another build type.

Does cupcake offer the ability to change the theme color? The big white border across the top drives me crazy. I'd like a clean 'dark' theme.

Do a wipe. Use mybackup to save everything then wipe the phone.

This is a little off-topic from Cupcake, but been discussed in this thread so...

Regarding rooting, I haven't. I've used Linux since 2001 and I'm sure I could easily do it, but...

    1. I just want to use the phone, not spend a lot of time playing with it. Now, I like playing with it, customizing with Open Home, etc. But in the end it's a tool. Similarly, I don't spend time constantly trying new and different distros at home. I only reinstall Linux every few years, usually because of new hardware. I hate doing reinstalls, takes a couple of days work to get everything just right again. Which is why I use CentOS - long-term support, no need to reinstall the latest and greatest version every 6-12 months. I work 70-80hrs a week and just don't have the time to mess with a phone or computer that much anyway.

    2. I want to have full access to the Market and app updates, and it's my understanding that rooted phones don't.

    3. Most important of all, the G1 is my only phone. No land line at home. And it's necessary for a lot of work duties. I use it for 3 email accounts, accessing secure company websites, VNC access to my office workstation, viewing documents, etc. I spend a lot of time on the road and the G1 has become my mobile workstation, replacing lugging around a laptop. IOW, my phone's gotta work, every day, without problems. So I can wait for the 'official' OTA Cupcake update and for those after. Rootin' is a temptation, but I'm certainly capable of screwin' things up and I just can't chance fouling up my phone, even for a day.

I am assuming you are just posting your thoughts & not actually asking anything... but... I guess I will respond to at least one of your points.

    2. JF's 1.5ADP (and other 1.5 ADP ports also), and ALL RC33 & RC9 modded firmwares provide full access to the market, 100%.
