Holy cow.....I swear I've seen this exact same post exactly word-for-word before.
Yes....the Google Maps app that comes with the phone is inadequate for those that were expecting a realtime turn-by-turn navigation function.
Yes, there are at least two solutions for realtime turn-by-turn navigation currently available today.
1. TeleNav service from Tmobile. $10/month subscription, and supposedly almost as good (some will argue better) as any standalone GPS device....but you'd pay less for a standalone GPS device.
2. Nav4all hit the market last week. It works and it's free.....the bad part is it is made to work on literally hundreds of phones, so the UI is a little clunky and the maps aren't the greatest. It's decent, but nowhere near as good as a standalone GPS unit or TeleNav for that matter. Select the "Fun British Female" voice and your phone sounds like you called a 1-900 number.
Two other things to keep an eye on.....
AndNav will be free, great support from the two devs, and it looks good and should work as well as TeleNav and other GPS software. Still requires a network data connection to plan routes, but you can download routes ahead of time for offline use and download maptile packs for offline use....both excellent features. They've ordered hardware to build a dedicated US server for routing. They are just waiting on an out-of-stock mainboard to arrive. Should have something working by mid-year if not sooner. A version is available in the Market now, but routing only works in a few US states.
AmazeGPS still claims to have a "Coming Soon: Android" version on it's website. If it ever comes to fruition, it looks like it might be good. Again, something to keep an eye on.
