OK...what are "points"?

I just noticed I had a notification of "points" on a post I made back in February.....

I didn't see any explanation of that in any of the FAQs, etc.

Can someone explain this to me?

It appears so, yes. But I have no idea what that means or what the accumulation of points implies.

Is this a good thing? Do I win something?

Reputation is worthless really. Just a system that can usually be easily abuse. Nothing but eye candy.
