Default Android Jailbreak, first steps forward !!- get root access to your G1

hellooo community !! Long time lurker, first time poster - i just received my new locked, unactivated G1 yesterday - and since I'm outside the US i'll just have to wait till an app or command line process is developed to jailbreak the G1 for use on our local telecom provider ( can't use the friend's SIM Swap trick, no T-Mobile in Dubai, may pay for the 20ish dollar code later)
but on the brighter side -

It looks like the some of the clever folks at XDA Developer Forums have figured out how to get ROOT access to the system via telnet, once you've telneted in - you have root access (how'd that slip by Google??!! ) and one can then mount the entire directory as writeable.

The simple 8 step process (shamlessly copied from original thread, you'll need to get Pterminal from the Android Market to do this):

  1. Turn on your phone's WiFi or enable USB debugging and hook it up to your computer. This gives your phone an IP you can reach it at.
  2. Get to a command prompt on your device by using the PTerminal application from the Android Market. (adb shell does not seem to work with these instructions, telnetd does not start up)
  3. cd system
  4. cd bin
  5. telnetd
  6. netstat (get your phones IP)
  7. telnet into that IP
  8. you now have root!
That really improves the possibility for a jailbreak app. coming out soon !!

YAY !

Some system files are locked down. With a jailbreak version you can edit the system files.

allright lemme try and explain, when you have root access (sorta complete software control) to the G1's operating system - you can make changes to it via your PC/Mac/Linux box - provided you're a linux-android-uber-genius Guru and know what you're doing, you can also transfer files to it and basically make major/minor code-level changes to the OS - its exciting because it opens up the possibilties for an application or patch that would allow you to get the phone to work with any operator.

@vbreal - you're right Android is free and doesn't need to be jailbroken, but the G1 is currently tied-in to T-Mobile, it doesn't work with other operators without a SIM unlock code - "jailbreaking" would involve making changes to the phone's "internal organs" via a patch or software hack- that would allow the G1to work on any supported GSM network.

Thanks for explaining! Sounds exciting and nerve wrecking!

Would this give the opportunity to solve the SD Card Storage Problem (i.e. mounting the drive and re-directing installs)?

I wish that would happen!

And Dubai, I can't wait to visit there, for their underwater hotel!

Exactly what I'm thinking! Here are the commands:

=======================

The commands below are NOT TO BE RUN on your phone. I will not have my hands on the phone until Tuesday, if you feel like doing this before then you need to do some exploration first to figure out the proper directories to move over to the SDcard. This is just what you would do in any linux based system.

Say you find out the bulk of your apps are in:

/usr/local/apps/

So you have like

/usr/local/apps/breadcrumbz.apk
/usr/local/apps/opera.apk
/usr/local/apps/...

You would just open up the terminal (which I've heard alot about and am very excited about having linux shell access on my phone!) and enter...

~ $ mv /usr/local/apps /sdcard/
~ $ mount --bind /sdcard/apps /usr/local/apps
~ $ echo /sdcard/apps /usr/local/apps bind defaults 0 0 >> /etc/fstab

And BAM you just moved all your apps to the storage card and set it up so that whenever android accesses or writes to /usr/local/apps it's writing to the storage card. The power of linux haha.

This is NOTHING to be worried about.
I haven't looked at the file structure closely, yet, so beware you might have to make small adjustments to what rogers has written.

I'm too busy/chicken to try this today. Anyone want to give this a try. (I don't recommend unless you consider yourself to be a Linux administrator! But, hey, it's YOUR phone...)
