I bought two different adaptors from separate suppliers on Amazon. One was a straight through mini-USB to 3.5mm plug and the other was a little brick the split the port into a 3.5mm jack and another mini-USB. The single plug did not work well at all, sound only came through one ear and it was lower quality. The little 2-port splittter works very well, the sound is great and it allows me to power the phone and listen to music at the same time. I haven't tried a data connection through the USB at the same time as listening on the headphones yet, but from what I know about the USB port this will likely not work. One caution is that when the port adapter is plugged in the G1 thinks the mic should come through that port so the phone's mic is disabled. If you get a call you have to remove the whole adaptor.

I was able to get one of these for free from the manager of my local T-Mobile store (in a plastic bag a couple of weeks ago -- not the new official packaging). I suspect he may have pulled it from one of the White units they got into stock that already included them. I had expressed my concern about the lack of adapter when I first purchased the G1 (on availability day 1) and he had promised to make good on this when the adapters became available. Customer service had also assured me that existing early G1 adopters wouldn't get burned on this. So buying one is certainly an option, but you may be able to pressure for a free one if you are clear about your concerns.

I received one of the HTC cables with my phone (purchased at Wal-Mart about 4 weeks ago), but immediately discovered a problem: the length. When you attach the converter cable to the phone, then add a standard headset, it seems to leave you with about 15 feet of wire dangling.

I bought one of these (why i didn't buy the other, cheaper one, I don't know, but...) and found it makes the cable length much more manageable.

No, it doesn't have the button and I suppose you have to pull it out to answer the phone, but that damn cable it a lot shorter now. Good idea for someone as klutzy as me.

I love my local T-Mobile retailer, walked in, asked about the usb adapter, went to the back and gave me one, and told me to have a nice day. It took a total of 5 minutes. awesome.

I guess I lucked out since I walked into my T-Mobile store last week to buy another charger and asked the guy if they had any of the 3.5mm adapters and he just went in the back and gave me one for free. It's a tad bit too long for my liking so I might just buy a shorter one online.

Stopped by a TMO store on the way home from work last night, and they didn't have any (seemed not to know it was a valid product).

So I called Customer Service this morning, and they bounced me over to some department that sells accessories. The guy said that the initial shipment was defective and had no idea when a "fixed" shipment would arrive.
