Users are finding out the hard way why T-Mobile says you need to have a data play in order to have the T-Mobile G1. One user traveled abroad and ended up racking up a $102.85 bill while data roaming. The big twist here is the fact that he had turned ... Read more

There's no reason not to bring it overseas. Just swap the SIM card out for a foreign carrier using some prepaid minutes or something.

This better not be true. I was in Canada for a few days, and if I get a $100+ bill, I'll be PISSED. I specifically turned off data so that would not happen, although I did receive a few text messages (not by choice). No way to use phone and not accept them that a I am aware of.
W Update: I just checked t-mobile.com -- under "My Account"-->"Bills and Usage". Then on the right, under "See details of current usage", I didn't notice anything unusual. Five bucks or so over the regular bill, but I did make like one or two roaming calls from Canada. Here's the scary thing though: Under the usage details tab, I can pull down "data services charges" .. I see no activity, but there are six pages of NOTHING. Choosing between the various pages doesn't show a thing. We'll see what happens. But to be clear, I am not going to pay for "data roaming" that I specifically told the phone not to do. Want to make sure you don't access data overseas? Go in the settings and change the apn to something wrong. Wrong apn = no access to data usually. Not sure if it will work, but sounds like it will.

I like your tip on that DJ
and i hope they're not making him pay this amount. How would any customer know that the phone always "reaches out". Upon reading, it seems the CR didn't even know that. I hope they reverse those charges. |

Well I live in Hong Kong and I have an internet plan with my phone company but right now I turned off all my data because they already told me that I have $40+ HKD extra charge for 3G downloading...(it could be the inital setup with gmail account but not sure got the phone Nov 24th) but I do notice that the 3G icon on the phone do have some signal of downloading and uploading when I leave it on and alone. So I waiting to see what happen when my bill come probably next week. Because I am still trying to figure out the apn configuration on the damn phone for my carrier and see if they support the browser or not

Actually I tried to change my APN settings to something incorrect. However, the phone keeps connecting to internet, apprently using some internally stored configuration by the time I initially synchronized with my google account. Is anybody experiencing the same?
