The gentleman who got it to work was using a pre-1.0 Android OS . . . video recording used to work before they removed it for the release-ready OS 1.0/RC19 for when G1s started shipping. Sadko Mobile has a CamLine program that records video, but it only works on the pre-production SDK emulator/G1.

What kind of technologically inept mother has a G1?

This reply completely brings this post off topic. I am responding here as you posted the question, if the moderators wish to remove/move my post and our reply's that is understandable.

My response was 30 minutes after the question was asked. If he/she was still waiting for someone else to use the internet to answer a question then they got the response that was needed.

I guess I should have just used a letmegooglethatforyou link, people seem to think thats funny and not insulting.

    Hmmm,

    I heard of this before..

What's the back story behind the removal of this "sadko mobile" (searches)

I hope that they restore some of the lost functionality of Android soon. XMPP, in particular, is HUGELY important.

They will... it's called "Cupcake"... Haven't heard much on it lately (at least not substantiated claims), but it's supposed to be released sometime this spring... It will add video recording, bluetooth stereo (thank God!) and many other compelling features that were dropped at the last minute to reach stable production on the OS for the G1 shipment deadlines.
