I wish I knew. I looked for a changelog but found nothing. Doesn't seem to support saved passwords, away messages, or incoming message sound alerts though .

I downloaded it and have been logged on with out interruption for about 50 mins while the phone was idle. Thats a good enough update for me. I use to get logged out every 5 mins.

I checked out the new version- couldnt really tell anything different- still no audio options, login save, cant see nicknames, etc.

perhaps it was just a fix to keep you logged in

It does log in faster than the default app. But it's very plain. I'm still waiting for Winblows Live (MSN) to allow custom emots since some freinds i talk to use them. With all that screen real-estate for us...G1 users could easily see 100 x 100 pixel emots that MSN allows you to use on the desktop app.
