oh yeah is it OK to go ahead and get rid of "IM" from the "Manage applications" list...or is MEEBO somehow using files from the official IM program, I need to free up some memory...and of course...IM right now is USELESS

I don't think you can remove "IM" through settings. They should have renamed IM into GTalk, because thats all its good for.

Any idea on battery consumption with this thing in the background?

Just tried it, and like it quite a lot. It would be better if the app could:

    a. close a conversation
    b. allow me to rename the contact to a name of my choice (from showing email address to a name of my choice)
    c. search for contact
    d. have presence information appear in the Contacts application.

Aside from that, this works pretty well, like Pidgin on my N800 Internet Tablet., but the level of integration could be better. I do hope that the guys at the Android division do better with the built in app soon.

Anyone try just to let it run in the background idling. For me after a while it just closes itself out. =\

Well, yeah, it seems to be kinda a tradeoff. On the one hand, it logs on quickly and buddy lists work GREAT. --Unlike the psychotic buddy dance that happens in the stock client. But notifications are kinda pitiful on here. Yes, it notifies you in the bar, but it doesn't vibrate, flash, or make (an AUDIBLE) sound. I didn't think it made sound at all, but when I was testing it, I noticed it makes a crackly little "donk" sound when an IM comes. The ability to choose the tone it uses and vibrate would be nice, as well as when you get a new message, you should have a notification of that message in the pull-down shade. Right now, it does preview the text of the message in the bar, but when you pull down, it just says meebo is running, and you have to go into it and find who sent you a message to talk to them.

It looks like a really good start, but definitely a ground floor release. Hopefully they will very actively develop it. With a little work, it could definitely convince me to start using IMs on this phone.

Are you the kind of person that doesn't donate anything (code, money, time, hardware, bandwidth) back to the community? A technology welfare recipient?

It loaded really slow, then got lots of force closes the first time i used it. It wouldn't even really sign in fully. I never really got to use the application. Forced closed all the time, so i un-installed it. Pretty disappointed.

hmm, I've never used AIM or any IM protocol on any phone I have ever owned. I've installed Meebo, I'm very impressed by the app but I still don't give a damn about IM on the G1 or any phone.

Thank you though, it might come in handy one day.

seems like most of the IM's dont get sent...out of 10 IM's, only 4 actually got sent...I didnt even test how many are actually being received.
